You might've heard the term certified nursing assistant. Sometimes certified nursing assistants are referred to as CNAs.
What is a certified nursing assistant?
What they do
CNAs serve an important role in healthcare. The specific tasks of a CNA depend on the setting. But, Nurse.org states that a CNA’s main work tends to be helping patients with daily living activities and other healthcare needs. What does this actually mean, though? Some of these tasks could include bathing, grooming, toileting, eating, and moving. CNAs are directly supervised by either a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
Why you should become a CNA
There are a variety of excellent reasons to pursue a CNA license. First and foremost, CNAs get to serve patients and make a difference every day just by doing their work. Secondly, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects an 8% growth in CNA jobs through 2029, meaning that you should be able to find work in the field. The average hourly wage for CNAs was $15 as of 2020, and the cost of pursuing a CNA license is low when compared with university tuition.
If you earn your CNA license, that will help you bridge the gap between becoming an LPN or an RN. Many nursing schools require their students to earn their CNA license to serve as career training. Working as a CNA while in nursing school will help you feel more comfortable and confident as you work toward finishing your degree. CNA work allows you to put your learning into practice. Finally, you’ll be working closely with LPNs and RNs, so you’ll have a better idea of what will be expected of you as you grow and learn as a nurse.
