On Wednesday, July 10, Concordia’s Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Physician Assistant students participated in the annual disaster simulation at CUAA’s North Building.

Approximately 100 students from the nursing, physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), and physician assistant (PA) programs participated in this year’s Disaster Simulation, either as clinicians or victims. While nursing students have participated in this simulation during past summers, and last year they collaborated with OT students, this is the first year that all our healthcare programs participated together.

The Scenario

On Wednesday, July 10, the School of Health Professions and The Ronald and Marvel Jones School of Nursing participated in a simulated bomb disaster at the North Building.

The hallways were filled with smoke and sound of deafening alarms. Victims had realistic injuries created with moulage, applied two hours before the event.

Clinicians on scene triaged victims, provided first aid, and assisted in transporting them to a local hospital, simulated by our nursing skills lab. Here, they received treatment in the emergency room and an overflow emergency department, which was set up in the hospital’s therapy gym.

CUAA security was heavily involved in planning this event and participated in the exercise as part of their training.
