As schools across Michigan continue to face teacher shortages, CUAA is equipping graduates to help meet the need.
This spring, 60 education students will graduate, each prepared to step into the profession. The milestone reflects more than a single class. It signals a broader effort to strengthen the teacher pipeline and remove barriers that can prevent future educators from entering the field.
“There has been a teacher shortage discussed for nearly two decades,” said Dr. Jim Pingel, dean of the School of Education. “CUAA’s School of Education is working to meet that need by not only encouraging and supporting future teachers, but by preparing graduates who are equipped to make an impact on their students’ mind, body and spirit.”
Michigan continues to face challenges in staffing classrooms. Shortages are most visible in high-need subject areas and in districts serving under-resourced communities. As experienced teachers retire or leave the profession, schools are looking for individuals prepared to step in and serve.
Stepping forward in today’s education workforce
CUAA pairs preparation with a strong focus on access.
Of the 60 graduates, 43 completed a graduate pathway through the Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction with teacher certification. The program serves individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree and want to transition into teaching. Another 17 students completed undergraduate education degrees, representing a more traditional route into the profession.
Together, they form a group shaped by hands-on learning and mentorship, with a clear commitment to serving others.
Learning through experience

“These MSCI students are a unique group who come to the program already knowing what teaching involves and have a strong desire to teach, all while balancing full-time jobs and, in many cases, family responsibilities,” said Wendy Hardy, associate professor of education and MSCI director. “They spend their days in classrooms across grade levels and graduate well prepared, grounded in both practical experience and the Lutheran values that guide Concordia’s approach to education.”
From the start of the program, students step into classroom settings where they apply their learning alongside experienced educators. They build skills in instruction and classroom management while developing effective ways to engage students.
For many in this year’s class, that calling will lead them into districts where the need for qualified teachers is greatest.
Keyndra Bozung has shaped her path through a program designed to meet students where they are. She balanced coursework, student teaching, and personal responsibilities while staying connected to faculty and classmates.
“Concordia’s online Michigan bachelor’s program helped me fulfill my calling to become a certified educator,” said Bozung, who graduated this month with a Bachelor of Arts in Lower and Upper Elementary Education. “The coursework was practical and relevant, and I felt prepared during student teaching, especially when designing engaging, community-focused lessons.”
Grounded in Concordia’s mission
Concordia prepares graduates with practical skills and a clear sense of purpose, equipping them to serve their communities.
As graduation approaches May 2, the focus turns to the individuals who will carry this work forward. Each graduate will shape the students and communities they serve.
“I feel ready to meet students where they are, create meaningful learning experiences, and build strong relationships with families and the community,” Bozung said. “I’m grateful for the encouragement and mentorship I received throughout the program, and I’m excited to begin my journey as a certified teacher in Michigan.”
At a time when schools are asking who will step in, CUAA graduates are ready to answer.
