Meet Jeff Smith, OTD, OTRL, assistant professor in the Occupational Therapy Doctoral Program at CUAA!

Jeff Smith is going on his third year at CUAA. He teaches a variety of courses including assessment and treatment courses focusing on adults, neuroanatomy, and motor learning courses among others.

What got you interested in occupational therapy?

My mother was a certified occupational therapy assistant. One of my earliest memories was being in a clinic with her. I wanted to help people be able to get back to the life they wanted to live after an illness or injury.

What is something you are passionate about that most people don’t know?

I love to fish and be on my boat. My family and I can be found on the water a lot of the time.

Do you have any secret talents?

I’m not sure I would be considered talented, but I can play a little guitar. I enjoy playing even if others do not enjoy listening.

If you could have any superpower what would it be and why?

I would be able to fly! I love to travel and there are so many places I would like to travel to.

What is a unique thing about CUAA’s Occupational Therapy program?

I think our program is unique in the way we try to bridge the gap between the academic world and the clinical realities that exist. We are also passionate about our role as Christian therapists that treat people compassionately and morally in the service of Christ.

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?

My parents taught me to put my trust in God and to find balance in my life. The healthcare field demands a lot of someone, it is important to find people and meaningful occupations that invigorate you.

If you could learn a new hobby or skill what would it be?

I would love to be able to be fluent in another language. Italian and Spanish languages interest me.
