CUAA wind ensemble performs

Two award-winning Concordia ensembles will perform Tuesday, April 20, 7:30-9:00 p.m.

It’s that time of year again. The weather is finally warming up—and so are the musicians in the CUAA Wind Ensemble and Community Orchestra, preparing for the annual Spring Concert.

Earlier this year, both these fine ensembles were named national semi-finalists in the prestigious American Prize competition in the classical arts. Their joint spring 2021 performance will take place before a limited live audience (to allow for social distancing) in the CUAA Gymnasium, but will also be livestreamed for the broader community to enjoy.

This year’s event will feature some exciting pieces, both new and familiar.

“The Wind Ensemble will be performing the Michigan premiere of a new piece of music celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage,” said Dr. Bill Perrine, CUAA Associate Professor of Music and Director of Instrumental Activities. “Entitled ‘Image on Truth,’ by Nicole Piunno, it is inspired by the life of Sojourner Truth, whose Christian faith led her to support both abolition and women’s rights due to her belief that all people are created in the image of God.”

In addition, the Community Orchestra will be performing selections from two J.S. Bach orchestral suites, featuring a special guest soloist: Ali Dettmer, a graduate student in flute performance at the University of Michigan.

“Even though the concert will have limited in-person attendance, we’re excited to be able to perform before a live audience once again,” Perrine said. “And I hope that members of the community will tune in online. We have two extraordinary groups of student musicians here, and we are excited to share their God-given gifts with a wider audience.”
