For those who are called to serve, service never stops
As Veterans Day approaches, the entire Concordia University Wisconsin & Ann Arbor community takes time to reflect and honor all who have served in the military of our nation. Such sacrificial service is the embodiment of the Concordia mission. Concordia’s mission states: “to help students develop in mind, body, and spirit for service to Christ in the Church and the world.” The call of Jesus also instructs:
“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” – John 15:13
Expanding service beyond the military
Our friends in the military have taken that mission seriously. Through Concordia’s Accelerated program, many are continuing their journey of sacrificial service! Two recently enrolled students have taken the step of transforming their military service to future opportunities to serve others and the Church. David Moseley and his sister-in-law, Leslie Moseley, both of Warrens, WI, are utilizing their military benefits as students in Concordia’s Accelerated Theological Studies program.
David Moseley is a native of Warrens, WI. He has served in the U.S. Army for 15 years in both active duty and reserve components. He was deployed overseas in support of the earthquake response following the earthquake in Haiti in January, 2010. Also, in 2019, he returned from a one-year deployment to the Middle East. He currently works full-time for the Army Reserve at Fort McCoy, WI, as a civilian. On the military side, he serves as an Army Instructor. “I value my service in the Army for the lifelong friends I have made. Also, I value the experiences I have had in different parts of the world,” says David.
Preparing for service to the Church
David enrolled at CUW to work toward a degree in Theological Studies. He enjoys studying God’s word and the Lutheran Confessions. “I want to take what I learn and not only apply it in my personal life, but also in serving others at my church, St. Paul Lutheran in Tomah, WI. I serve as the chairman of the congregation, choir director, and organist.”
David’s sister-in-law, Leslie, joined active duty Air Force after graduating from high school in 2008. Working in flight line maintenance, Leslie was stationed in Anchorage, AK. After three years, she decided to join the National Guard and move back home to Wisconsin. She currently works in public health at Volk Field Air Base in Camp Douglas. While raising two young children, Leslie earned an associate degree in Occupational Therapy.
Currently, she is continuing her pursuit to impact her community. Like David, she is earning a bachelor’s degree in Theological Studies. Leslie credits her military experience with developing “the grit and gratitude for the opportunity to go to college.” She explains further, “I found that with the mentors I had believing in me and putting me in situations that pushed me out of my comfort zone caused me to gain a very ‘can-do’ attitude. My daughter has extra needs, which is a challenge. But, I was unstoppable. I think the military programmed me to love a good challenge.”
Veterans Affairs Office supports students with excellence
Both David and Leslie expressed gratitude and appreciation for the staff of Concordia’s Veteran Affairs Office. The staff helped them line up all that was needed to make the most of their military benefits for higher education. The Veteran Affairs Office at both CUAA and CUW stands willing to serve those who are active military, reserves, or veterans, with first-class service to them and their families. And in the case of the Moseley’s, Concordia is helping them continue God-honoring lives of service as suggested in scripture!
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” – 1 Peter 4:10
Leslie wants to serve by spreading the good news of the Gospel in her circle of influence. She stated, “God put on my heart to use my testimony to reach non-believers. Suddenly, people were coming to me for spiritual guidance. He gave me a desire to know His Word well so that I could use Scripture in telling people about Him.” And through the Accelerated programs of CUWAA, the Moseleys will continue their commitment to serving others.
