Don't miss this opportunity to see the Concordia University Ann Arbor music ensembles perform at a world-renowned concert hall on the University of Michigan campus.
Since it opened in 1913, the Hill Auditorium in beautiful downtown Ann Arbor has been considered one of the world’s great concert halls. Known for its magnificent acoustics, this 3,500-seat venue has hosted renowned ensembles, orchestras, and speakers from around the world.
On Tuesday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m., “The Hill” will host the Concordia University Ann Arbor music ensembles for a free concert.
“Having one of the world’s premiere performance spaces right here in Ann Arbor, it is our absolute delight to offer our students opportunities to showcase their hard work and musical excellence on grand stages such as Hill Auditorium,” said Dr. John Boonenberg, director of church music and worship arts at CUAA.
“The Concordia Music Department is part of the fabric of the amazing music scene in Ann Arbor, and we look forward to continuing to celebrate our students’ successes, blessing the community with our performances, and showcasing the many ways that we ‘Live Uncommon’ at Concordia. We invite everyone to come out and be a part of what promises to be an enjoyable and memorable evening.”

Concordia Wind Ensemble will perform:
- Unsung Heroes, by local composer Brooke Pierson
- The Michigan Premiere of Hidden Currents, by Guest Composer in Residence, Katherine Bergman. This piece will feature Guest Artist Jillian Kouzel on oboe; Jillian is an award-winning soloist who regularly performs in the Michigan area and is currently a doctoral student at the University of Michigan.
- Frank Ticheli’s Angels in the Architecture, featuring Faculty Artist Kara Alfano on voice
Concordia Orchestra will perform:
- The first movement of Mozart’s Piano Concerto no. 1 in C Major, featuring faculty artist Dr. John Boonenberg on Piano
- The world premiere of Katherine Bergman’s Superior for chamber orchestra, with the composer conducting the performance
- Several movements from Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite
Concordia Choir will perform:
- Knut Nystedt’s hauntingly beautiful and timeless Immortal Bach
- Lush sacred anthems by two contemporary female composers, Eleanor Daley and Elaine Hagenberg
- Stephen Paulus’ emotional setting of a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, The Day is Done
- Words, a jazz/pop fusion a cappella setting written by “The Real Group”
- O Be Joyful in the Lord, by Gilbert M. Martin—a raucous and exuberant setting of Psalm 100, utilizing Hill Auditorium’s massive Frieze Memorial Organ
- Arborsong will be performing a William Billings’ motet in The Sacred Harp style, as well as Ola Gjeilo’s flowing setting of the Sanctus and Agnus Dei parts of the mass in The Ground
