Concordia University Ann Arbor is excited to announce a varsity Esports program that will launch in fall 2020. This initiative is another way to enhance options for students of varying interests and provides a unique path for students to experience the benefits of collegiate competition.

As a sanctioned sports program, Esports is organized, competitive video gaming. Participants will develop team leadership skills, contribute to a team dynamic, and represent the university as college athletes. The team will be co-ed and will adhere to the same athletic eligibility requirements as the 24 other teams offered by the university. There will be a coach (“Director”), practice schedules, and organized competitions. The skills and experiences they develop on the team will help them as they pursue their professional and personal interests.

“A robust Esports program has the potential to welcome more students into our uncommon 21st century Concordia experience,” said Rev. Dr. Ryan Peterson, vice president of administration. “As with all new programs and initiatives, our goal is to fulfill the mission of the University and serve our students well.”

The thriving college competitive gaming landscape continues to grow. According to the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE), the number of participating universities started with seven in 2016 and boasts 170+ universities today. The organization represents more than 5,000 student athletes and provides the structure and framework for universities to get involved.

According to Athletic Director, Lonnie Pries, “Our department is very excited to launch an Esports program.  We look forward to competing against the many other universities with this program, especially those within our WHAC conference.”

Esports is open to everyone and recruitment for the 2020 season is underway.
