Meet Grace Dodgson (’25) from Belmont, Ontario, Canada majoring in Secondary Education English.
Why did you choose to study at Concordia?
I chose to study at Concordia because of its small campus and welcoming community. Concordia gave me the chance to continue my hockey career along with furthering my education at a high level, achieving my future career goals. The School of Education was extremely appealing as it allowed me to have in-class experience and take credits in many different education-focused courses. Concordia’s education program is extremely unique, and I wanted to be a part of that.
What is your favorite thing about attending Concordia?
My favorite thing about attending Concordia is the family atmosphere and small class sizes. I have had the opportunity to gain close relationships with my professors that have progressed to future career opportunities and possible job references. Concordia has also given me on-campus job opportunities and volunteer experiences to build my resume. Another one of my favorite things is the resources that Concordia makes available, whether it be emotional support, career support, or physical support.
What is the best event you have attended on campus?
The best events I have attended on campus fall under student events. I enjoy grocery bingo that takes place every last Thursday of the month. I even won an air fryer at one of the bingo games! That would have to be my favorite event because of the big prize I won. The theme of the game was celebrity bingo. You had to make your way up to the VIP game. I also like to attend the athletic events at Concordia, it is a lot of fun when you see a big crowd that is cheering on your school’s team.
What is the hidden gem of Concordia that people should know about?
I think the hidden gem of Concordia that people should know about is the docks during sunset. The river is still, and the colors are very bright. It makes for the perfect picture!
What has been your favorite class here at CUAA and why?
My favorite class I have taken at Concordia was Foundations of Education. This was my favorite class because it was the first education class I had ever taken. It was the first time I stepped into a classroom in a “teacher” role, confirming my goal of becoming a teacher. I also became very close with my professor, and she has helped me find placements for my fieldwork to this day.
What motivated you to study abroad?
I wanted to explore education in another country to learn different skills and ideas to implement in my classroom. I have gone to school in Canada since I was 4. I wanted to learn how it is in a different country with a similar education system.
What is your favorite spot on campus?
My favorite spot on campus is the docks. I like going for walks to see the sunset reflect on the river and take pictures.
Have you joined any student clubs or organizations on campus? If so which ones?
I have joined the International Centre as an International Peer advisor. I help other international students navigate their way through Concordia.
Are there any challenges you have faced as an international student, and how have you overcome them?
I have not faced any challenges being an international student. Concordia has been extremely welcoming and has helped me navigate through my college journey.
Are there any local customs or etiquette rules in the United States or in Michigan that you found surprising or particularly intriguing?
The only thing that confuses me in Michigan is why they do not have front plates on their cars. I have always wondered why it is not required as in Canada you must have it.
Do you have any advice for other international students when choosing where to go to college?
The advice I would give to other international students when choosing where to go to college is to make sure the schools you are looking at have good resources for being an international student. Make sure the school has an advisor that can help with everything along with a community that is supportive of international student’s journeys.
